In this study I was experimenting with the background again. I was trying to avoid modeling everything I actually saw, so I tried going more graphic. I don't like it, but that's what I tried. What I do like is my contrast between the hard and soft light on the figure. Look at the subtle light under the chin area. I was trying to get a subsurface scattering type of result without actually using it. So this also became an exercise in light based translucency, which you can see to great exaggeration in the cloth.
