Thanks for your remarks. Your experience reinforces what I've suspected.

I've found flyers very effective, since you get the chance to tell people
_why_ (as you emphasised) they should attend, and they welcome the human
contact. Surprisingly I find people don't accept flyers as often if you
are simply stand there dressed in regular clothes; they show genuine
interest, even approach me, if I wear a T-Shirt also promoting the
performance. They also often approach me as I'm postering; but I don't
think posters are very successful unless you are already very well known.
