oddly enough, when playing around with translating an image to jpeg or
gif, i found that there *is* a noticeable difference in appearance (perhaps
this is what the original post meant by the many colors of jpeg). but
i found the gif image to appear closer to the original! maybe just the machine
i was using. in any case, gif should probably be avoided for the fact
that some people have been trying to copyright(?) the format; in that
you'd pay x cents every time you use the gif format they developed.
