It depends on where the digitized audio will be played
back. If you intend to put it on the net and want to
have the widest compatibility, you should encode the file
as a AU file, which many platforms can play. (Typical Mac
applications record into AIFF or AIFC files (Audio
Interchange File Format) which most Mac people can play
but not Unix and PC folks.
I suggest you get the program SoundMachine. Here is
one of the places where it lives:
