I use both HVS JPEG and ULead's GIF and JPEG SmartSavers. As you
mention, both work well. However, I find that I can tweak and get a
higher resolution image at a smaller file size using the HVS product.
The technology at work in the HVS JPEG and its GIF relative is called
"Human Vision Systems". Simply put, as I understand it, the product
removes colours of differences that the human eye cannot detect at the
resolution being used. You can see what happens by grossly enlarging
the resulting compressed image, which will have a somewhat blotchy
appearance when compared to a JPEG compressed image using non-HVS
technology.
I like being able to take 80kb images and shrinking them to less than
10kb for use on a web page. There'e a small photo gallery on our
corpporate page set at the address below where I've used HVS JPGE on som
of my photography to be able to demonstrate the results to clients.
Please feel free to have a look and see how the images load for you.
Pretty nifty stuff all round, though...
