Art.net was having ftp problems since just after midnight
(early this morning). The problem was that people couldn't
connect via ftp to art.net because there were already 41
open sessions on-going.
What happens is that some ftp programs such as fetch and
ws-ftp leave open sessions when they are abruptly terminated
(ie. if the program doesn't exit normally, it can hang
a session).
We have seen this problem happening for some time and there's
not really anything we can do except reboot art.net so that the
processes are really killed off. This frees up the daemon so that
new ftp sessions can start connecting.
When using ftp, we ask that you just please try and exit
the programs normally if you have made a connection to
art.net. Prehaps this will help keep the hung processes
from taking over the daemon.
Any thoughts, ideas and suggestions are welcomed...
The ftp program we use is from Washington State Univ.
