SOUND=SPACE is a multi-functional computer controlled interactive
electronic environmental musical "instrument" played by moving about in an
empty space surveyed by an Ultrasonic Ranging System using eight sensors.

The 22 Sept. Sydney set-up will be of great interest to Soundbeam users,
those interested in non-tactile MIDI controllers, dancers, educators,
performers and others interested in interactive experiences.

SOUND=SPACE was conceived and designed by Rolf Gehlhaar, one of the most
innovative and accomplished composers of the post-war generation. Gehlhaar
is unique for combining brilliant technical inventiveness and a secure
theoretical grasp with thrilling musicality.

While in Sydney Rolf Gehlhaar will be participating in the 9th Sydney
Spring Festival (showcasing new compositions), and will then take up a
Research Fellowship at UNE Armidale with SOUND=SPACE.

There are two permanent SOUND=SPACE Centres in the UK, one operated by
ARTLINK, a community arts organisation in Edinburgh, and one in London,
directed by its inventor Rolf Gehlhaar and based at MUSICWORKS, an
extensive community music resources centre, with two further Centres in
Brighton and Reading being planned. These Centres operate regular series of
workshops aimed primarily but not exclusively at special needs groups such
as children with behavioural and learning difficulties and persons with
various physical and mental disabilities.
