I haven't brought this up in the discussion until now, but if you have a
Macintosh you should check out BigEye. It's really an extraordinary piece
of software, and it really doesn't take before you can indeed "jam" with
it. It requires some bacis knowledge of MIDI, but it can be used at a very
simple level as well as being used as an indepth, programmable tool. If
you want more info, I will be posting a paper on BE to dtz in the near
future - but you can also check out

There you'll find demo versions of STEIM's software tools, all of which are
incredibly useful to performers, and which includes BigEye.
