I think it's possible to do both. Of course the constant hunger for
newness and innovation has been very harmful (as well as very stimulating)
in the past few decades. Out 20thC need to overconsume means that we tend
to overconume our ideas, too, and use them up and move onto the next new
thing before there's time to consider what we're doing. However,
innovation IS important when working with technologies that radically alter
the equations of the artform.
My solution to this particular heartache to to have concentrated on using
the same (innovative) technology for the past 2+ years, trying to work with
it deeply and trying to develop innovative techniques and ideas that bring
out the best in the dance work and in its use of technology.
I feel like my collaborator and I are succeeding (he says modestly) and
it's a terrific feeling.
